BTME - Business and Technology Management in Europe (Summer School, June 21st until July 8th, 2009)

Hosting universities

The following three partners are proud to have organised this international summer school as an Intensive Programme on Business and Technology Management in Europe:

Institut Universitaire de Technologie Strasbourg

When the IUT Robert Schuman was founded in 1967, it consisted of just two departments. While it expanded its offerings in 1971 and 1988 it now provides diploma courses in five different branches: chemistry, civil engineering, information and communication, marketing techniques and IT. The IUT is part of the Robert Schuman University which is named after the former Prime Minister of France who is also regarded as one of the founders of the European Union and the NATO. The vision of multi-cultural gathering has been continued for all these years and that's why the IUT may be called a precursor for international student exchanges.

Baden Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Karlsruhe

The dual system of learning, in which employers and state-run professional educational schools cooperate, has a long tradition in Germany. The "Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (BWCSU)", the former "Berufsakademie", transferred the traditional system of dual vocational training to the level of higher education.
In 1974, the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg launched this new project aimed at creating a fully integrated system of higher education on a tertiary educational level. It took only a few years for the project  to develop this system to an important part of the German university system with currently 20,000 students on eight campuses spread over the state.  On the BWCSU campus in Karlsruhe, more than 2,000 students are enrolled in the study fields of business administration, engineering and computer science.
A student at the BWCSU is both academic and employee. He has two learning places: the university campus for academic course work, and his employing company for on-the-job training. Phases of lecturing - normally of 12 weeks duration in a term of six months - alternate with periods of practical learning in the company.
One requirement for studying at the BWCSU is the German university entrance examination ("Abitur"). A second requirement is a work contract with one of the accredited  partner companies which defines the conditions of the traineeship including a salary which covers typical student living costs. All programs lead to an internationally recognized bachelor degree which is reached after three years. After graduation, more than 80 % of the BWCSU bachelors receive a permanent job offer from their employing company.
